REGISTERING TO VOTE
Becoming a registered voter in Texas
is not difficult. The paperwork can be picked up at
any local voter registrar's office or post office.
Among other information, applicants
must be ready to give their Social Security number
and full name. No one convicted of a felony (unless
sentence, probation and parole are completed) or ruled
mentally incompetent by a court of law will be issued
a voter registration card. Applicants must be at least
17 years and 10 months old when submitting the form.
They cannot vote until they're 18.
After the application is filled out,
it must be mailed or turned in to the registrar's
office. Postage and the address of the registration
office are both on the card, so all a prospective
voter has to do is drop it in a mailbox.
There is a 30-day processing period,
and then an applicant can expect to receive a voter
registration card in the mail. New cards are sent
to all voters every two years. Voters who move within
the area must re-register.
